Laura is proud of helping her family by keeping alive a tradition that has been in her family for many years and passed from generation to generation. Her specialties are plates, vases, jars, urns, bowls, etc.
She thinks that the demand of Talavera persists today but sometimes sees affected due to bad imitations. The difference between the real from the fake is the raised design and the high gloss and shine of the surface finish. The detail and care with which the design is hand painted is another feature. Thanks to these characteristics you can own a unique, beautiful and original Talavera item. |

Claudia is the youngest of the family… she says that the art of making real Talavera is an ancient manual art that have almost been extinguished due to big commercial warehouses with the mass produced imitations.
She has a deep respect for this craft, for its identity and honest work and wants to make sure this tradition is not lost to mass production forms ever.
Claudia wants to share a little explanation on how a piece of Talavera is done:
First the clay must be made, cured and then the piece must be formed. When the formed piece is done it has to be fired at a low temperature, then the piece has to be decorated and pass to the glazing process which gives the “Talavera finish”.

Each and every handicraft in www.merque.com is a unique and special item that is hand molded, hand drawn and hand painted individually with extreme care and dedication by our craftsmen. All our talavera sinks, talavera tiles and tin-brass mirrors are real traditional products.
Miriam learned the art of the hand painted crafts from his father, in the future she wants to have her own store and pass the tradition to her family.
The process of elaboration is very rustic; all our talavera items are “baked” in rustic kilns following a craft that extends back into history several centuries. She is proud to help keeping alive an artful tradition that has remained virtually unchanged with the centuries.
